Acquired from a retired Leica Rep in the early 80’s these are samples of optical glass that were given to Leica Sales Reps when they visited the Factory in Germany for training. The claim is that the Noctilux glass is the same as that which was used on the aspherical element on the first variants of this classic lens. Both pieces are still labeled with the original masking tape and pen. Dimensionally almost identical, the Noctilux glass is almost twice as heavy as the “regular” optical glass. It he days prior to ROHRS it is amazing how much lead and other heavy materials you could add to glass to enhance its optical properties.
The plain glass weighs @190 grams. As you can see from the image on the scale it takes @160 grams to get the scale to balance.
