Some thoughts on Leica 28mm....
In the out of focus areas @f1.4, 28/1.4 bokeh is on the busy/harsh side, typical behavior of Leica ASPH lenses. I find 28/2 bokeh smoother, especially out of focus bright spots (most important, no double edges).
Contrast is higher than 28/2 with recording of fine details almost at the same level. Vignetting similar to 28/2 but more obivous @f1.4 due to 1 full stop more aperture.
@f1.4, 28 lux is a lens of character to me. To shoot with this lens @f1.4, I need to slow down and think a bit. Unless very close to the subject, out of focus areas doesn't blur enough to separate the subject/background but still obviously blurr. This can be unpleasant to look at in a number of situations. But when the subject is close enough, 28 lux is very 3D and stunning.
@f2 and slower, I prefer 28/2 for the smoother bokeh, lighter weight and less contrast redenering.
If I shoot only at f2.8, my love goes to pre-a 28/2.8 ver4 E46.
For b&w and vintage look, it will be 28/2.8 ver2 for the moment. I have not yet found a ver1 to compare and know for sure. Mr Puts said ver1 and ver2 have similar performance. Ver1 is very expensive due to the small quantity made and Japanese believe it is the best but I like to find one someday to compare with my ver2 to confirm. |
