Just to blow water.
- the aperture in fact can be set by counting clicks. In the dark, one probably would use only f0.95-f2.0, not a lot to count
- the distance can be preset, for instance at 5 ft, and walk up to shoot the subject by guess distance, many old masters did in the same way
However, agree that this lens is not practical. But who would buy it for practical shooting anyways
