Don't know why, tone wise I like the M9 shots more than the S2's.

bubu c-hing,

the M9 shots and S2-P shots were not only taken in very different lighting conditions but also post-processed very differently

the M9 shots were taken indoors under tungsten lighting, whereas the S2-P shots were taken in cloudy, flat daylight (with a few shots supplemented by 1x LED weak artificial light)

the main color correction to the M9 shots was only due to a lowering of the color temperature

post-processing of the S2-P shots was more complex, involving (1) raising the black end of the tone curve to crush the black and compensating the loss of dynamic range by raising clarity, creating the "matte" look; (2) split-toning that warmed the highlight and cooled the shadow.the reason was an attempt to create a feeling of alternative reality (or unreality) associated with shots taken on the filmmaking set

I have been experimenting with various ways of processing color, some natural, some artificial, as I am not sure about my own color style yet

having used the CCDs of both M9 and S2-P, my initial impression is that S2-P is considerably superior, even though with S2-P one has to put up with all the usual limitations of medium format

I am sure the S2-P is a superior camera to the M9.

I also hope to see from you how these two perform in the same lighting environment. Certainly I do not mean those technical head-on comparisons.

Somehow I feel, M9 with an average M lens, for its compact size and conventional look, would intimidate a portraiture subject less than a S with S lens. And such difference of relaxation of that person that reflects on his/her face/eyes, though subtle, might affect the overall quality of a photograph.

That said, I reckon the S camera is a great tool in studio where the subject is prepared to be lit and filmed. Or, landscape where higher quality of sensor and larger format always win.

Just my 2 cents.

The interaction between photographer and subject is a very interesting topic.

How a camera affects the interaction between photographer and subject is a very interesting sub-topic within the topic.

Mirrorless fans can debate days after days on whether an M or a Sony a7 or a Fuji X-pro is a better instrument for street photography.

As the person holding the camera, my initial feeling of using Leica S is that I would instantly be treated by the subject(s) and anyone else around as a pro (even though for fxxk's sake I'm not as everybody here knows!) No questions asked, even though no one has seen my work or even the output just taken with the camera. Leica S is the ultimate 輸人唔輸陣 pro camera, even more so if combined with the Leica S case with wheels (which I haven't bought).

As the person holding a Leica M, my feeling of how people view me varies. It depends on the occasion, where I am, what I'm doing, and what pictures I'm taking. I have a feeling that the impression conveyed by a M user to the subject(s) and those around may be described by one or a combination of any of the following words:

affluent, artistic, artsy, attention-seeking (?), Asian (?), brand-conscious (?), chok, classy, different, discreet, esoteric, extravagant, fashionista, fastidious, GAS, hedonistic, hobbyist, idle (?), idiosyncratic, ignorant (?), image conscious, Mainland Chinese (?), non-conformist, nouveau riche (?), particular, passionate about photography, passive-aggressive low-profile (?), perfectionist, pretentious (?), retro (?), self-conscious (?), serious about photography, snobbish (?), special, stupid (?), sugar-daddy material (?), stylish, uncompromising...

Feel free to add more words

As to the popular myth that an M looks less threatening than a dslr to a subject, I'm not sure how other small cameras would look more threatening than an M.

(My main personal reason for using Leica gear is that generally they take better pictures than their competitors's products of the same class, even though they require more photographic knowledge to use than their competitors's products of the same class. I can't control how people look at me.)
