Back 18 years ago when I work in a desktop publishing company, a guy came to us with a CCD sensor designed like a roll of film. It can insert into any film camera and any film camera will turn into a digital camera instantly.
The prototype he shown is very convincing he is looking for funding for further R&D and development. I guess at that time no one buy the concept because digital cameras are stating to come out at lower cost already no one feel the need for film camera conversion.

The guy is also targeting lower end camera only.. I remember he use a point and shoot Nikon or something like that for the demo.

Leica did something similar which is the DMR for R8 and R9... not very welcome by Leica folks too.... it is actually a very cool idea and product. It won't come cheap, each of our cameras require manual installation and testing, regardless the cost of the CCD alone, the work to done by cfu would be as high as a M3, but if the camera could interchange with film and digital sensor, then it is all worth doing. otherwise it would be the same as normal M9 with M3 outlook Why border if you can buy a second hand M8 or M9 with less money than this experiment? This guy's experiment required a M3 and A7 even second hand is cost more than a M8 or M9. It is like funding someone doing some hobby project but doesn't look like will come into real production.
I read something about the digital film roll project years ago and it's failure is partly because the distance between the expose window and the roll is different in different cameras. Guess the modified M3 would be as thick as any current Leica digitals with attaching a LCD from A7 or NEX.
The one without LCD is interesting, though.

This is the 19th year old implant a Nex 5 into a Konica Auto S3 with LCD display.
Modifying a M2, 3, 4 may not be a dream. Support!!{:7_137:} SUPPORT, TOO~!!!!! 當然支持, 可能係全世界首部 M3-D
