Colors from Sigma Foveon (SD14 n SD Quattro) and Fujifilm X-Trans sensors

本帖最後由 wk7leung 於 2017-4-7 00:55 編輯

The cameras used are Sigma SD14 and Fujifilm X-E1. The lens is an f2.8 manual 85mm Rollei except for 2a as specified. The artificial light is from Godox V850.

Personally, in favor of the colors from the Foveon sensor.

1 Fujifilm X-E1

1a.

No, they weren't.

I think, for XTran, Jpeg is still OK. For Foveon, RAW files are safer for finer contrast n exposure adjustment n color renditioning.

Foveon is a good match with Zeiss glass.

Forgive me for saying this, but don't you think these macros look unusually flat?

Seems Foveon is better from the images above.
Are the light direct straight to the front of the flowers?

In my understanding, being flat refers to two things:
1. an even or a levelled smooth surface; and
2. shallow depth among the objects in a plane.

In those senses, the perspective in the shots is the case and is the result of:
1. positioning the plane of the camera to being perpendicular to the plane of the petals;
2. retaining, as far as possible, the sharpness of the petals through stacking a series of focused petal shots by using a software called Xerene Stacker, thus reducing the elevation among the petals.
3. The 85mm lens becoming a 135mm as a result of the cropping factor, the perspective so obtained becoming flat naturally provided that the camera is positioned suitably.

The aperture is around f2.8 to 4. The depth of field is pretty shallow. Bokeh is thus ensured.

The purpose of stacking is to ensure that the sharpness of a relatively large area of the flower is retained and yet a shallow bokeh can be achieved.

Light is artificial, applied laterally and from behind.

The shots in #4 below were taken with Sigma's SD Quattro and Nikon's f2.8 AFD Micro 105mm.

#4a This was converted from RAW to doubly-sized Tiff for stacking before converting to a Jpeg file

I am using a Nikon-to-SA mount and an M42-to-SA mount for mounting my non-Sigma lenses to the SA bodies.

Some people convert the Sigma SA mount to the Canon one to revitalize their Canon-mount lenses. I have no Canon-mount lenses with me. I have no comments but if I did have, I would not do that because all the SA mount functionalities will be lost.

As a matter of fact, Sigma lenses are pretty good lenses as well. Using them, you can obtain images that are sparkling in ensemble as the algorithm in the Sigma bodies are meticulously tailored for the SA lenses.

You can mount, for example, Rollei, C/Y, Nikon, Leica and M42 lenses on Sigma bodies but the thing is at present, only the M42 adapters are available; you can get the M42 mount from forum members in DCfever.

In the past, there were a Japanese and a British, who made SA-compatibile adapters for the Nikon and M42 lenses. They are no longing providing such a service. A pity. Anyway, if SD Q and HQ can sell well, maybe they will take the oppotunoty to earn some easy and fast money.
