I became more and more critical in assessing Leica Black Paint and almost need to give up in collecting it because there just not much out there that I feel comfortable with. We should be very picky when it comes to collecting vintage, that's part of the fun, otherwise.. why bother?
I would like to share one tips per day in this thread. Let's see how long this thread can last! Of couse, discussions are welcome!! But let's keep the discuss on the one tips shared per day!!
I have no intention to write technical information that you can easily search in books or internet. This is more a personal observation and sharing. Hopefully it is something interesting that you don't see mentioned in any Leica books.
These are just my personal opinion and observation. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

Pandachief Tips #1
Let's start wtih an easier one for our beginner Black Paint collectors as well:
Only the vintage M2, M3 and M4 black paint will show some forms of bubbles in the paint. Newer black paint such as M6, MP3 etc. will probably never develop bubbles due to the paint used. The bubble are caused just by exposing the Black Paint Camera in the air and moisture and even the very new condition one will have a few developed. If there's no bubbles developed on a M2, M3 or M4 black paint, please beware.Repaint can look very beautiful and real but so far it is still not easy to "artificially" make those bubbles.

BP M4 is relatively newer and there's chance that bubbles are not as obvious or not showing yet...... Furthermore, there's not much fake Black Paint M4 out there because there's plenty out there and still not so expensive. The cost of a chrome M4 and to commission a good repaint technician to repaint it is not cheap compare to a real one.
So M4 should be relatively "Safe".
M4 should be glossy black paint. Early M3 and M2 and MP original will have a more matt black paint.
Not very glossy, but can't say it's matt.... difficult to describe....
Anyway I trust the seller, it's original :)

Very new and it looks right to me as a original black paint camera from many other evidents. A good one!
Again, I am saying, only M2, M3, M4, MP original or other black paint M camera in that era will show bubbles, doesn't mean there won't be any out there that without that's real. Again, assessing Black Paint should be a combintation of many many different areas to form final judgement.

How big would these bubbles be?
I have a well-brassed M4 that has bubbles over the left-behind paint area. They are as tiny as a toothpick tip. But the paint is glossy, not matt to my eyes. 正！擔定凳仔等學野！ thx for sharing Thanks for sharing Ching!
